Musical interventions for patients with Parkinson’s disease

A pilot project with a survey and a music-based improvisation workshop

This part of the B-AIR project focused on exploring the use of music in the Slovenian healthcare system. Thus, the perspectives and experiences in the use of music with musically active medical doctors were first explored. From the results of this survey, an idea arose about exploring the perspectives, experiences and attitudes towards the use of music with the patients as well. A collaboration with the Parkinson's Disease Association of Slovenia - Trepetlika was formed, which played the crucial part of reaching the target population - Parkinson's disease patients. The main goal of the survey was to explore the patients' perspectives on the use of music and their interest in engaging in musical activities, aimed to help alleviate some symptoms of the disease. The study was followed by a musical improvisation workshop for Parkinson's disease patients, members of Trepetlika. The workshop allowed space for self-expression as well as social connection and received very positive feedback from the participants.
