About the Emerging – The consciousness
“Emerging: The Consciousness” is the second part of the “Surfacing” series dedicated to presenting how a new-born perceives the world, starting from its earliest moments of consciousness that is awakened while the baby is still in the mother’s womb, to the way babies get to know the world after they are born.
The purpose of this programme is to use sound images to introduce us to the baby’s original perception of the world, which is the foundation of the subsequent consolidated consciousness and new knowledge. The time babies spend in amniotic fluid is similar to the movements and sensations in the primordial ocean, which stands for the earliest origins of life on Earth. The author uses these universal perceptions to explore the evolution of individual consciousness by employing sound.
This programme is part of the research in the field of Ars acustica and it is part of the programme tradition of the series Sound Workshop of the Drama Programme Department.
The project was designed so as to allow for multiple works under the common title “Emerging”, each of which would cover particular stages in the development of a new-born baby.
