Children's First Words

About the first five words of Slovenian children and recommendations for promoting early vocabulary development

Although a child's most common first word is "mommy", it is not so with all children. A survey of the first five words spoken by Slovenian babies and toddlers found that the first words can also be thank you, car, binky, duck, eat, or daddy. The research shows that both boys and girls speak at the same age and use similar words to express their needs, while the findings also provide interesting comparisons with other language groups. We'll be talking to Nika Jelenc, Professor of Speech and Language Therapy and Surdopedagogics at the Soča University Rehabilitation Institute, about the first five words of Slovenian children and recommendations for promoting early vocabulary development.
