In these broadcasts, prepared and hosted by neuropediatrician, head physician Igor Mihael Ravnik, prof. Breitenfeld described the beginnings of music therapy and its prolific growth in this part of Europe in social psychiatry during decades after the Second World War. With Mr. Giuseppe Pino Poclen from Milan, who has been coming to Slovenia and working here for a long while, we followed his varied personal and professional development path from music education to music animation and music therapy. Now, the need and the opportunity have arisen to talk about music therapy in our country today in a series of conversations on the topics between medicine and music, concerning sound, silence, voice and music.
In the first two programs on this topic, we will venture into music therapy through the personal professional story of music therapist Mrs. Mihaela Kavčič. She will present her work at the Hematology-Oncology Department of the Children's Hospital in Ljubljana. Her professor, mentor and supervisor, Mrs. Špela Loti Knoll, will be joining us in the studio.
Children are still getting cancer and dying, a loss that always hurts tremendously. With respectful mind on them and their bereaved, forever marked by this life tragedy, we may nevertheless state that the mortality rate from childhood cancers has fallen considerably due to the efforts of contemporary medicine. Quality of life during treatment is much improved, with great advancement having been made in its service. One piece of this contribution has also been the engagement of music therapy.
For this occasion, Ms. Ivana Brglez, who was treated in the ward as a child, has written a memoir of the time when she received music therapy during her treatment. Her mother, Mrs. Božena Brglez, will also contribute her memories of music therapy during her daughter's treatment.
The words of head physician Jožica Anžič, hematologist-oncologist from the Department of Hematology-Oncology at the Children's Hospital, will complete the picture from a more remote time perspective.
